When the Commercial Energy Benchmarking and Disclosure bill passed on June 21, 2012, it was a huge step for energy efficiency in Philadelphia. The legislation encourages building owners and tenants to pay attention to energy use in buildings and encourages implementation of water and energy saving measures that will make buildings more comfortable and less expensive to operate.

Pursuing a Career in the Green Jobs Industry

Two members of ECA's Training Center staff, Sherleen Laboy and Aurora Carrero, presented at the Verde: Latinas and Green Jobs Forum on June 10, 2013. The event, sponsored by the United States Department of Labor Women's Bureau, highlighted the benefits of pursuing careers in the energy efficiency industry for Latina women.

ECA receives $50,000 Grant from Bank of America for Apprenticeship Program

The Energy Coordinating Agency (ECA) graduated 7 high school seniors from the Philadelphia School District from the Philly Youth Green Jobs Connection, the country’s first pre-apprenticeship program for weatherization technicians and installers, on June 3.  Students received 96 hours of training toward a certified apprenticeship. Bank of America presented a $50,000 grant to ECA to support the pre-apprenticeship program.

ECA’s Training Center is the first in the Mid Atlantic region to become IREC accredited for Retrofit Installer Technicians and Energy Auditors.  The delivery of ECA’s training prepares individuals for the new BPI certifications.  IREC accreditation denotes that ECA’s curriculum, faculty, facility, processes and procedures meet the most rigorous national standards developed by the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL).
